The Blame Game . . . April 28, 2015

It isn’t something new, as it’s written about in Genesis 3, Verses 11 through 13 … the very beginning of the Scriptures:

And God said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?”

The man said, “The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”

Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?”

The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

Here we are several millennia later and are things any different than with Adam and Eve. From my own observations, I’d say there aren’t many individuals who are much different when it comes to the “blame game.”

How often do you hear someone – after an incident large or small – say, right off, “it was my fault … I made a mistake, I made the wrong decision, I wasn’t paying attention.”

Of course, if you step up and accept responsibility, you’ll have to face up to and suffer the consequences. Yet, isn’t that the Christian thing to do?Chesterton photo

While this may not be fully apropos to the matter of the “blame game” and responsibility … I believe that the root cause of this overwhelming problem in today’s world is dealt with simply and directly by noted English writer and lay theologian G. K. Chesterton, who was once asked by a London newspaper to join other authors and thinkers to address the weighty and important question of “what’s wrong with the world.” His response:

Dear Sirs,

I am.

Sincerely yours,

G.K. Chesterton

Or, as I heard quoted on television this past Sunday, stated in terms you cannot misunderstand: “the problem with the world is ME!”
