Former President and Army General Dwight D. Eisenhower once said: “The rights we have today we may consider as natural rights, but they were won by blood, sweat, sacrifice and death.”
As a nation, we often take our freedom for granted. We enjoy daily what some have paid a dear price to preserve for us. On this Memorial Day . . . we remember and honor those in our armed forces who made the supreme sacrifice … some recently … others in a long-forgotten war.
After the war between the states . . . it was called “Decoration Day” or “Dedication Day” … when ladies from Virginia placed flowers on the graves of Confederate and Union soldiers. Now … it’s Memorial Day … for all who “answered the call” and did not return.
Whether 60 years ago or just 60 days ago … let us remember the bravery of the boys and men who served … and, yes, women too … and let us pray for … let us dedicate ourselves anew to achieving a more perfect world like the one they fought for.
To keep their dream alive is to serve their memory on this Memorial Day. It is through their valor that this nation continues to be the land of the free and the home of the brave!
