Favorite Hymns March 16, 2013

enLighten MailboxAbout your hymns post … I came up with about 100 hymns that weren’t on your list. My personal favorite is He Hideth My Soul, which didn’t make your top 50. That’s OK … I agreed with most of yours, anyway!

Last year, my sister and I went to a concert and, afterward, we were talking with two of the singers. I mentioned that the guys should sing the hymn, Whiter Than Snow. I thought it was an interesting idea . . . however, neither one of them knew the hymn I was talking about. Never heard of it. Made me think I was possibly crazy. But, many other people I’ve talked to since DO know that beautiful hymn!

Here’s a question: When anyone – doesn’t matter what artist – decides to record a hymns-only project, why does everyone record the SAME ones? Are there only about 20 to 30 hymns that everyone knows? That’s just sad. If you want to re-introduce hymns to people who maybe didn’t grow up singing them, then pick different ones than the last artist did.

One of my favorite hymns ever is The Savior Is Waiting … beautiful hymn. And no one sings it anymore – probably because they don’t know it. That, or Let Jesus Come Into Your Heart … or Springs of Living Water… or New Name in Glory … or Lead On, O King Eternal. (I could keep going, but you see what I’m saying.) An opportunity missed. We always appreciate “love notes” …

My husband and I both love enLighten more than words could ever tell. Your Southern Gospel music goes with us to and from work every day. We’d be lost without it. God must use you to reach the lost 24 hours a day. What a great ministry you have. The hearts of the lost will be open to music sometimes much quicker than through the spoken word. We pray God will continue to use enLighten to reach many for the King of Kings. Alma, Sarasota, Florida

Thanks for what you do in bringing us this wonderful station with this glorious music. I am so thankful we are able to enjoy something like this. May God continue to bless you. Janet, Anderson, South Carolina

I got a new car last year and was excited because I had Elvis!! That is . . . until I tuned in enLighten. It was wonderful to find a station that played great Gospel songs, old as well as new. I would like to hear some of the groups like “Union Station,” the group started by Ryan Seaton. Also Canton Junction, a group with Tim Duncan. As you can tell, I am a Signature Sound fan. I also like Karen Peck & New River, Ivan Parker, Jason Crabb, the Booth Brothers, Ball Brothers and I could go on and on.

I grew up listening to the Blackwood Brothers, Hovie Lister, Jake Hess, Homeland Harmony and Eva Mae and the LeFevres because my daddy was an avid Southern Gospel fan. I am so thankful that he made Southern Gospel and music in general a part of my life. Phyllis, Rising Fawn, Georgia

Today I RE-discovered enLighten‘s quality broadcasting on XM Channel 18 after not listening to much live XM Radio recently. Before I sold my 18-wheeler a few years ago, I am happy to say that I was one of your many listeners who petitioned Sirius XM to keep enLighten on the air when they planned to remove it from the old Channel 34.

The programming seems to be even better than I remember. I do like your inclusion of older classic Southern Gospel, as some stations focus mainly on current releases. The lovely voice that records the station breaks seems to be the same as I remember several years ago.  Bill, Vinton, VA

There’s not much for me to add here … except that I hope groups and soloists who plan new hymn projects will take Janet’s counsel to heart and seek to dig further into the great hymn repertoire that exists. Re comment by Phyllis … we do play both Canton Junction and Union Street regularly. And, of course, I appreciate the comment Bill made about the voice that does the ID’s – we’re coming up on our 38th wedding anniversary.
