Lord, listen to your children praying,
Lord, send your Spirit in this place.
Lord, listen to your children praying,
send us love, send us power, send us grace!Something’s gonna happen
Like the world has never known
When the people of the Lord
Get down to pray.A door’s gonna swing open,
And the walls come a tumblin’ down,
When the people of the Lord
Get down to pray.All the people sang:
Lord, listen to Your children praying,
Lord, send Your spirit in this place;
Lord, listen to Your children praying,
Send us love, send us pow’r, send us grace!
That simple but profound song was written by Christian composer, singer and pianist, Ken Medema some 40 years ago … whom Alicia and yours truly first heard and met at least 25 years ago. Ken, like Gordon Mote, is blind yet has been gifted by the Lord to excel in what he does.
The message of these poetic words is a call by us to the Lord, yet one we know the answer to that Ken clearly addresses in the first verse … the Lord is listening and stands ready to deliver if and when we “get down to pray.” In fact, He tells us that clearly way back in Jeremiah 33:3: “Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.”
Top of the List . . .
At this time of the year, most everyone talks about making their resolutions, proclaiming the changes they are going to make starting now. While I’ve never been one to join the crowd in doing this, I am this year making one that I will endeavor to keep from here on … maintaining a more consistent and dedicated prayer life. I, like so many others, seem to be so consumed in keeping up with our commitments and activities – for me, keeping enLighten running – that we, like with getting sufficient exercise, tend to put prayer at the bottom of our “to do” list.
And, my first prayer is that you will put a greater commitment to prayer at the top of your resolutions list as well … ‘cause as we all know … there’s power in the prayers of God’s people!
Lord, Listen to Your Children Praying . . .
This song has been one of my personal favorites ever since I first heard it. And, it was being sung by Gospel singer Frank Boggs, who’s recording we play on Sunday Inspiration along with a version by the mens’ chorus, Christian Edition. However, I’m not aware of it having been recorded by any mainstream Southern Gospel group. Have you?
In closing, I leave you with these words by David, from Psalm 40, Verses 1 through 3:
I waited patiently for the Lord;
he turned to me and heard my cry.
He lifted me out of the slimy pit,
out of the mud and mire;
he set my feet on a rock
and gave me a firm place to stand.
He put a new song in my mouth,
a hymn of praise to our God.
