A medical mission team just spent a very productive week of serving in the Dominican Republic. At the end of the week, the host pastor thanked the team members for coming and all of the good that they did in his poor, poor community. However, he went on to say that, while the team’s efforts were very much appreciated … there was an even bigger mission field . . . America! He then added we all know, “your nation was founded as a Godly nation, but look how far it has strayed.”
Of course, Jeff Steele wrote a song more than 10 years ago titled We Want America Back, that addressed the subject. As many of you remember, his family’s recording of it quickly gained great popularity. And, we still play it and get requests for it on enLighten.
Here’s a portion of the words . . .
Something is wrong with America.
She once held the Bible as her conscience and guide.
But we’ve allowed those who hold nothing to be sacred,
Like Sodom of old, to push morals aside.
Where are the men who once stood for right?
And the women who championed their cause?
We must return to the values we lost,

This nation is like a runaway train,
Headed down the wrong track,
It’s time for the army of God to arise,
And say we want America back.
Two words that have surfaced in some of our incoming President’s speeches have been “responsibility” and “accountability.” In a message of mine which aired the day before the inauguration, I urged everyone to pray for the incoming President and all members of his Administration … that they may allow themselves to be guided by Godly wisdom … and that these men and women will carry out their duties with honesty and integrity, where the best interests our nation and its citizenry, as well as the world, are placed ahead of “self” and the special interests who seek to influence their actions and decisions.
As I’m sure you recognize, we need to pray that every member of Congress will also be moved to begin following this same path. This nation’s problems are many. Without the “change” that Mr. Obama has promised, and without every person charged with leading and guiding our nation beginning to take honest responsibility for their actions … what will our future look like? Look where the greed and “self-serving” approach has gotten us.
Lord, help us! Recently, Kevin Spencer recorded a song titled “God Bless America Again.” A great thought, wish and prayer … yet it seems to me that we as a nation must begin to turn back to Him, to seek Him, to attempt to meet Him at least half way.
This leads me to the fact that we are expected to be God’s hands, feet and mouths here on earth. So, it would appear that it’s up to us to not only pray for our leaders and their turning to God for guidance … it is up to us to hold them accountable, just as Mr. Obama is speaking of.
