History . . . September 11, 2014

We must never, never, never forget our history!

As 18th century British Statesman and Philosopher Edmund Burke said, “Those who don’t know history are destined to repeat it.” I believe no truer words were ever spoken. So, on this September 11th, as we remember those horrific events of 13 years ago, it concerns me when I hear or read that much of this nation’s important events are being written out of the history books from which today’s school children are being taught.

On this day in September 2001, I was in the studios of XM Satellite Radio here in the Nation’s Capital, located only a dozen blocks from the Capitol building. We were a brand-new company entering a new world known as satellite radio. Our first official day of broadcasting was to be the very next day, September 12th, 2001.

Several months earlier, I had been hired and brought to Washington to create and program the “1940’s Channel” … which encompasses another date that we must never forget, December 7th, 1941 … the first and only other time when American territory came under major attack by outside forces. Of course, I’m speaking of the bombing of the military installations at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii – which then-President Franklin D. Roosevelt described as “a date which will live in infamy!”

Today, are our young students told of the events of that day? How many young Americans can even tell you where Pearl Harbor is located, even though it is today still the headquarters of the United States Navy’s Pacific Fleet.

As we remember this day in September 2014, I can’t say it any better than my friend Wilma Shannon, of the Southern Gospel family group, the Shannon’s, has:

On Tuesday, September 11, 2001, many of us watched in horror the attack on America, in New York City, where 3000 people died including children. It was also known as the deadliest incident for Firefighters and for Law Enforcement officers in the history of the United States.
Please, let us pray for all the families who lost loved ones on that terrible day, and remember and honor those who lost their lives in the 911 attack! Let us pray for our Country and its future! If there ever was a time, we need to pray for America, it is now. We don’t want this to happen to our Country again. Let’s put GOD back in America! Amen!New York - 9-11

As we face new and continuing evils in this world who threaten us, our land and our way of life … happenings that take the men and women of our military into new battles … I’m not sure what options us Christians have except to do as Wilma says … pray for our nation and for peace … and fight to bring our nation back to the God under which it was founded!
